HOMEGROWN GIN CELEBRATES LOCAL & RECEIVES TRIPLE GOLD AWARDS IN YEAR 1 OF PRODUCTION
June 2023, Cape Town: indiGINous, the new kid on the craft block, was awarded a Double Gold at the 2022 SA Craft Gin Awards as well as a Gold medal at the 2022 Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards, held at the end of 2022.
indiGINous offers gin enthusiasts from around the world a taste of South Africa with its first label ‘Zest’, incorporating twenty-two botanicals largely selected from the floral kingdoms of the Western and Eastern Cape.
With Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) as the signature botanical, indiGINous Zest is a premium, handcrafted 100% distilled gin that is wildly refined, yet offers down to earth sophistication. The juicy leaves of the Spekboom offer a hint of citrus on the palate, complemented by Kapokbos, Slangbos, Confetti Bush and Cape Aloe, amongst others. Smooth and silky, it is produced with fresh spring water from Elgin’s mountains to create this dry style gin, subtly traditionalised by Juniper and floral undernotes.
Founded by all-women team Kirsty Pienaar and Saskia Brown, both with a tourism marketing background, indiGINous was crafted to give local and international travellers a true taste of the diversity that South Africa offers. After much research into what the flavour profile should embody and which local ingredients the recipe should include, Pienaar and Brown partnered with award-winning distillers Blomendahl to bring their concept to life. indiGINous embodies their true passion for exploring the country, along with an understanding and appreciation of the intricate craft of distilling premium gin.
“We are ecstatic about these awards, which prove that South Africa can contend with the best in the world on so many fronts, including our spirits offering” says Pienaar, adding that additional plans are in the pipeline to extend the range and further expand into Africa.
“Master distiller Franz and his son Ben Blomendahl have been exceedingly patient in helping us create what we believe to be a true taste of SA”, adds Brown. “We are also committed to giving back; as we are specifically servicing the tourism and hospitality industry, a percentage of our earnings will go towards the community project that each company is currently supporting”.
Best enjoyed neat, on the rocks or with tonic, a sprig of Spekboom and a curl of lemon rind, indiGINous welcomes chilled vibes and cheeky cocktails, best served with the backdrop of an African sunset.
